Auburn Hires Hugh Freeze As New Head Football Coach
Upside on the Field, Risk of Embarrassment Off It
Auburn University has hired Hugh Freeze as its next head football coach. The move comes with both upside on the field and the risk of embarrassment off it.
Freeze, 53, was born on September 27, 1969, in Oxford, Mississippi. He was a successful high school football coach at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee, before being hired as the head coach at the University of Mississippi in 2012.
Freeze led Ole Miss to a 39-25 record in five seasons, including three bowl victories. However, he was fired in July 2017 after an investigation by the NCAA found that he had committed numerous violations of the organization's rules.
After his firing from Ole Miss, Freeze spent two seasons as the head coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He led the Flames to a 13-1 record in 2019 and a 10-1 record in 2020.
Auburn is hoping that Freeze can bring the same success to the Tigers that he had at Liberty. However, the school is also aware of the risks involved in hiring a coach with Freeze's checkered past.
