Early Life and Education

Chrystia Alexandra Freeland (born August 2, 1968) is a Canadian politician and journalist who has served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Minister of Finance since 2020. She is a member of the Liberal Party and has held various cabinet positions under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Freeland was born in Peace River, Alberta, and raised in Peace River and Calgary. She attended Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian History and Literature in 1990. She subsequently attended New College, Oxford, where she received a Master of Philosophy in Russian and Eastern European studies in 1993.

Journalism Career

After graduating from Oxford, Freeland began her career in journalism. She worked as a reporter and producer for various news organizations, including The Globe and Mail, The Financial Times, and Reuters. In 2004, she became deputy editor of The Globe and Mail, a position she held until 2010.

Political Career

Freeland entered politics in 2013 when she was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Liberal candidate for Toronto Centre. She was re-elected in 2015, 2019, and 2021. Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Freeland has held various cabinet positions, including Minister of International Trade (2015-2017), Minister of Foreign Affairs (2017-2019), and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs (2019-2020). In 2020, she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

Personal Life

Freeland is married to Graham Bowley, a journalist with The New York Times. They have three children. Freeland is proficient in English, French, Russian, and Ukrainian.
