Pope Francis condemns Ukraine war as 'violent aggression'

Pope appeals for an end to the violence

War in Ukraine 'perhaps somehow provoked'

Pope Francis has called the war in Ukraine an act of "violent aggression" and a "sacrilege" without justification. In an interview with Reuters, the Pope said that Ukraine should have the "courage of the white flag" and called for an end to the violence.

The Pope's comments come as the war in Ukraine enters its second year. The conflict has caused widespread death and destruction, and has forced millions of people to flee their homes.

In the interview, the Pope also said that Moscow's invasion of Ukraine was perhaps "somehow provoked." He did not elaborate on what he meant by this, but his comments have been interpreted as a possible reference to NATO's expansion eastward in recent years.

The Pope's comments have been met with mixed reactions. Some have praised him for speaking out against the war, while others have criticized him for not being more forceful in his condemnation of Russia.

The Ukrainian government has said that it is "bewildered" by the Pope's comments about a possible provocation. President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that there is "no justification" for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
