On July 1, Nemat Minouche Shafik became the 20th president of Columbia University. Shafik is the first woman and the first person of color to lead an Ivy League institution.
Shafik, an economist and former deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, succeeds Lee C. Bollinger, who served as president for 20 years.
In a statement, Shafik said she is "honored and humbled" to lead Columbia University. She said she is committed to building on the university's legacy of excellence and innovation.
"Columbia is a truly global university, with a faculty and student body that represents the best minds from around the world," Shafik said. "I am excited to work with the Columbia community to build on our legacy of excellence and innovation."
