Two Consecutive Earthquakes Strike Jammu and Kashmir

Tremors Cause Panic, No Damage Reported

On Tuesday morning, two earthquakes struck the Jammu and Kashmir region within seven minutes of each other, causing widespread panic among residents.

Magnitude and Location

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.9, occurred at 6:45 am local time. Its epicenter was located 34.17°N, 74.16°E at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The second earthquake, slightly stronger at magnitude 5.3, struck just seven minutes later at 6:52 am. Its epicenter was located 34.18°N, 74.17°E at a depth of 15 kilometers.

Impact

Both earthquakes were felt across the region, including in Srinagar, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts. People were seen fleeing their homes and gathering in open spaces.

According to preliminary reports, there have been no casualties or damage to property. However, authorities are still assessing the situation.

Safety Precautions

Residents are advised to remain calm and follow these safety precautions:

  • Stay away from glass windows and heavy furniture.
  • If indoors, take shelter under a sturdy table or bed.
  • If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and trees.
  • Do not use elevators during an earthquake.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks, which can sometimes be stronger than the initial earthquake.
